Sanjaya = AWESOME

Did anyone besides me watch the dating show Cupid, in which an infinitesimal percentage of America voted on which hot dude would wind up with the hot woman? Before the contest was thrown open to the public, the woman's friends narrowed the pool down to 10 guys, one of whom was an Austrian model who talked just like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was conventionally good-looking, but he was a complete and utter assclown, and after about three episodes, he was all, "Baht I luff huh!" It was perversely fantastic and hilarious, because he was incredibly creepy in a sort of harmlessly doofy way, and he made the woman want to crawl out of her skin.

Which meant, of course, that superior suitors got picked off week after week after week, as the woman would cry, like, "Why is America doing this to me?" Sadly, though Austrian Guy made it to the Final 2 -- !!! -- America eventually chose for her the guy who would, as far as I know, actually wind up with her on an apparently permanent basis.

Right now? Sanjaya is that Austrian douchebag, getting weirder by the week, and I love him. I don't want him to win, but that's only because he's ill-suited to sing "On The Wings Of Dreaming Eagles" at the finale. My masterpiece is far more appropriate for a grand diva-off between Melinda and LaKisha.

This was my whole rationale for wanting Pickler to win last year. But she was never half as much fun as Sanjaya. The mohawk? Come on, he knows what he's doing. Which makes him less Covais and more...okay, I was going to say "Constantine" and now I understand why everyone (save me and apparently now Stephen) hates Sanjaya. Point taken, universe.

My hatred of Constantine taught me how to feel again, in part because his smarminess was rooted in intense self-satisfaction. He genuinely seemed to think he was too cool to be on American Idol, and that -- along with seeing his frog lips pooch out of his goddamn ass face week in and week out -- made me crazy.

Sanjaya's just... gutting it out, I think. What we're seeing is more self-defense than subversion; he's making a mockery of the process because he knows it's making a mockery of him. I'd probably do the same thing, but with even worse sucking.

I thought his vocal last night was among his best performances so far. He's still that girl at Talent Night whose primary achievement in a global sense is *not* speeyacking on the front row of the audience, but compared with last week's painful display, I thought the singing was vastly improved.

Utterly beside the point, and still nowhere near good *enough*, but improved.

I think it's hilarious how the judges are trying to figure out EXACTLY what they need to say to get him gone. It won't work any time soon, but points for trying.

I can't really hate the kid at this point -- after the SNL sketch, what else can he really do? At least he knows that bad will outlast boring in this competition.

I really dug him last night, a lot, because I felt like he was doing the only thing he possibly could. I found the Covais/Stevens way of dealing with being put in that position very unappealing. They both seemed to just remain as earnest as they could, trying and trying to convince people to like them -- like me, like me!

Sanjaya did something last night that I've rarely seen on this show: he displayed an actual attitude of "whatever." Sarah and I talked once about the stupidity of discussions about "tarnishing" the victory on The Apprentice when it's tarnish to begin with. I kind of feel the same way about this. It's like... Sanjaya isn't ruining the integrity of the competition, because the competition has no integrity, and I like the fact that he seems to know that.

I actually thought his "whatever" attitude was totally transparent. He's such a scared little boy. The thing is, he WAS able to sing, once upon a time. His audition was pretty decent. It's the "Aw, shucks" thing that irritates the crap out of me. He just... bugs. I'll stop now.

I agree, Dave. I don't hate *him* as much as I kind of hate America for being contrarian and keeping him around, but I would have marginally more respect for him if I thought he was actually doing his own thing. As it is, he feels coached to me.
