Meh-linda

The woman can sing; I'm not saying different. But she's boring.

She's not boring because she's always so good, mind you. Haley is, by contrast, not boring, but watching her cornering on those high notes too fast is taking years off my life; I'd rather listen to Melinda any day.

She's just...okay, if you've ever witnessed a college a cappella group attempt "Respect"? Similar effect with the Donna Summer performance. Nice sound, note-perfect, no soul.

And that new haircut is frumpy as hell. I don't know who signed off on that but it's time to admit the error and hook her up with some extensions, because it emphasizes her non-neck and makes her look as middle-aged as she often sounds.

I disagree, but I can understand the sentiment, especially after this week, which wasn't my favorite of hers. But for me, I'd substitute "LaKisha" for "Melinda" and everything you said would be ten times more true. Woman is dead in the eyes, every single time.

For me, part of the Idol experience is remembering, right around this point every season, that I would never actually buy a record by any of these hosebags. Melinda currently occupies the Ruben/Paris position of people I like primarily compared to suck-ass people on the show; once she enters the marketplace, she'll no longer benefit from the bar being set at Haley's level.

That said, I still think she's awesome. Go, Melinda, go!

Gabriel (holding two points ahead of me, you bastard!), on his blog tonight, floated the what-if of Melinda singing "Just A Girl" for Gwen, and how fucking awesome would that have been? So, yeah, it would be nice if Melinda could shake things up for us now that she's the frontrunner. She's not boring me, but I think I have to put a "yet" in there.

Agreed on the hair, though.

CB, right back atcha -- I disagree, because I actively dislike LaKisha (oh, sense of entitlement -- we totally knew ye) and thought Joe's "don't just kick back waiting for the big notes" assessment in the recap was right on.

So actually I agree with you, but am irritated by LaKisha vs. bored.

I would have loved "Excuse Me Mr." from Melinda. Crap, why didn't she do something good? Now you guys are making me sad. And I totally agree about the haircut, and Simon was dead-on about the dress; it looked like a 70s window treatment.

LaKisha...I've been interpreting the look in her eyes as "Flint, Michigan" rather than entitlement, but in practice it probably doesn't matter. She bores AND irritates me. Bleh.

i'm starting to think Jordi will win on account of everything said here.

I third the sentiment that Lakisha is really freakin' annoying. I also think her dress last night was WAY worse than Melinda's. I watched with my mother, who told me that she hoped that Lakisha had practiced moving around the stage in that dress to make sure she wasn't going to fall out of it on live television.

I don't think Melinda actually is boring, though. I think Melinda is brilliant, and she totally delights me. My favorite part was the moment when Gwen Stefani seemed to realize the absurdity of her giving Melinda singing advice.

Agree on the hair, don't agree on the boring, at all. I actually get goose-flesh sometimes when she sings, and I usually hate the songs she picks ("My Funny Valentine"? I almost puked my pants when they announced she'd be singing that a few weeks ago, but she absolutely killed it). She is leagues above everyone on the show, no question. If it really was a talent competition, it would have ended after her audition. But, NOOOOO. We have to let America vote, because that always leads to the most qualified victor. Ahem.
