The Great Debate

Linda and I have been hurling invective at each other ever since Blake's performance: I think it was the exact opposite of "a massive risk" -- Blake's been waiting to play the beatboxing card for weeks now -- while Linda wants to marry Blake and stand in the front row as his funk-pop band plays Sublime covers at frat houses. So who is right? It's me, right?

Also, if Bush really wanted to be cheeky and self-referential, he'd have said, "I'd like to congratulate America for conquering poverty last week. Mission accomplished."

I like Blake, I support the beat-boxing, I don't feel proprietary about Bon Jovi, but that was the hottest, messiest hot mess since Sanjaya. It didn't play to his strengths, the hair looked like shit...I have a little more respect for the risk itself than Stephen, but I don't think it paid off and he's probably going home.

Him and Phil. Heh.

I totally disagree. I thought it was very cool and totally stylish and neat. I think for people who like him (like me), that was right in the sweet spot. Everybody else was just fronting a bar band.

I liked it too. And I've been agnostic about Blake, over the weeks. I used to think his "vocal entendre" performances and his performances with strong vocals were mutually exclusive, but this week, he pulled it all together at once. I enjoyed it very, very much.

Okay. I ended up watching it again when my wife got home, and Denise completely flipped her shit for it -- found it blazingly original and exciting, blah blah blah. And I have to confess: It wasn't that bad, though it was hardly a vocal showcase, not that I give that much of a crap about that either way.

Denise also made a great point about the "massive risk" thing that stuck in my craw -- that the massive risk lay in the audacity of deconstructing an unbelievably familiar, even iconic song. And I will admit that I hadn't thought of that, and that maybe (choke) she and Linda might be... right.

Break out the whipping noises! Whuh-chhhh! Whuh-chhhh! Whuh-chhhh!

Fuckin' Blake.

Oh, sure, when DENISE says it. Whatever, dude.

I still hate it. But I was pretty into Melinda's performance, so evidently up is down.

Stephen Thompson said...

Okay, now I hate it again, because of Linda.

I said this via text last night while Stephen was bitching about how it wasn't that much of a risk: "Blake INVENTED that version of the song!" I guess I needed to use the words "iconic" and "deconstructing," like I'm assuming Denise did.

I read your message as defending the act of beatboxing as original -- which it's not, unless you're Paula.

But whatever. I grant you one-tenth of a point on this one, and will resent you for winning this argument until I get the opportunity to slam your hand in another car door. At which point we will be even.

I liked it but didn't love it. I do give him points for originality, and I definitely think he's not going home. I think it will be LaKisha and Phil.

I think Chris is going home for sure. I refuse to guess Phil, for reasons of having been wrong about his demise every single week.

Phil's totally the Chosen One, you guys. Where have you been?

13 comments, and nobody's used the phrase "self-indulgent"? Get with it people! Because that's what it was.

Not that it was bad, because it does take some balls to try to do a live "remix" of an iconic song... But, really, Blake. Do eat a steaming bag of dicks.

Oh, and Jordin blew, and it made me sad.
